Algae and Biofilm

The total number of algae species is estimated to be in excess of 30000. Many of these species are harmless but some create powerful toxins. In the right conditions algae can form blooms and if these blooms are from toxic strains they can cause harm, either through the toxins they produce, or from the actual biomass significantly altering the environment for other organisms. These algaes can harm and poison animals, humans and other life forms. They can also clog filtration units and pumping systems. Algae can thrive and form blooms in a variety of conditions, but warm and nutrient-rich water, often a bi-product of heavy land fertilisation provides a perfect environment for growth. Traditional treatments are chemical based which are both expensive and potentially damaging to the environment.
